GIRLS ON THE RUN OF SOUTHERN OKLAHOMA
Helping Girls Find Their Strength
Do you know about Girls on the Run? It’s a fun, evidence-based program that uses physical activity, friendship and meaningful conversations to help girls in grades 3–8 build confidence, character and skills they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
We are especially fortunate to have Girls on the Run Southern Oklahoma right here in our community. Led locally by Julie Hunnicutt, the council has been serving Southern Oklahoma since 2013 and currently reaches about 300 girls each year.
What I love most about Girls on the Run is that there really is no question about the impact you’re making when you get involved. You’re giving girls a place to build confidence, discover their strengths, connect with others and learn that they are capable of far more than they may realize.
This one is personal for me, too. I was fortunate enough to help bring Girls on the Run to Ardmore, and watching the program continue through difficult seasons, including COVID and changes in leadership, has been incredibly rewarding. In many ways, it reminds me of what I’ve watched happen in my own two daughters: girls grow into confident, capable young women when they have people and programs around them that believe in them.
So maybe this is your sign to get involved. Sign up a girl in your life, volunteer to coach, help with a 5K, or make a financial gift. There are lots of ways to support the girls in our community and every one of them matters. Learn more at www.girlsontherunsook.org.
